A Fork in the Road of Progress

By JR, May 23, 2014

I received a simple email the other day, that provoked a real movement in me. It was an automated email by my domain provider asking if I wanted to renew my subscription for another year. First of all, I thought to myself, has it really been a year since I made the switch from my old basic WordPress blog, to full blown website? After that realisation had settled in, I went through the stages of what I like to think of as “The 3 stages of amateur blogging”, sort of like the 5 stages of death, with less stages, and…erm, death.

Numero Uno: Guilt – From the fact that I don’t update as much as I would like to, and that I am somewhat losing my creativity by not updating every other day like some bloggers and food writers manage to do. Which spiralled into…

Numero Due: Defence – The words “I do this for my own personal enjoyment, and any readers I get are a welcome bonus!” form and flutter around in my skull for a little while. Until it finally subsides into…

Numero Tre – Acceptance – I succumb to the fact that if I really wanted to write more, I would make the time to do so. Also, trailing on from the ‘Defence’ stage, that this whole thing is for me, I like practising my photography, I love practising my cooking. I like having an on-line record of my progress, just in case my laptop spontaneously combusts, and because it’s neatly categorised and presented.

So after all this had settled down, I had spent several hours (including a full working shift) mulling over what I should do. Until somebody said the simplest words to me, it’s part of who you are. And I guess it is, an eternal source of motivation, and a physical presentation of how some of my skills have improved since I first started this blog, in 2010 on Blogger. Still not great, but I’m going in the right direction, and that fills me with immense amounts of motivation and happiness.

From 2010:                                                                to 2014:

And for any that were curious… I renewed my subscription just fine.
